Sick of Myself

A movie that tells how far narcissism can go with dark comedy

The 2022 Norwegian movie “Sick of Myself,” directed by Kristoffer Borgli, starts off as a movie that examines the simple but conflict-ridden relationship of a couple living in Oslo, but also displays the stages of the relationship that progress and go to entirely different places. Signe and Thomas actually have an unhealthy relationship where they compete with each other.

Thomas is progressing towards becoming an artist interested in contemporary art. The interest in Thomas from the art circles begins to bother Signe, and there is a sudden rupture. She is also someone who is not asked about by her family and not very liked by her friends. Starting to do her best to attract the eyes turning towards Thomas both within their relationship and their own circles, Signe takes on a completely different personality to gain status. For example, at a dinner organized by Thomas’s art circle, she says that she is allergic to nuts to draw attention, even though she does not have an allergy. Again, in this direction, with the help of a friend, she obtains a few illegal pills. Although she knows that they will harm her, she drinks the pills without dosage. The wounds that begin to appear on her skin due to the effect of the pills spread to her face, and she finds herself in the hospital. She likes being sick because her boyfriend Thomas, who generally doesn’t care about her, is by her side. Despite all of this, the reason why Thomas cannot leave Signe is that he also experiences a certain level of need for attention and love, although not as much as her.

Signe’s friends visit her at the hospital, and she receives messages on her phone from other friends and acquaintances. This highlights Signe’s narcissistic personality disorder and her alarming condition.

After the illness spreads throughout her body, a modeling agency discovers Signe. This modeling agency actually has a structure that exploits the disadvantaged and marginalized people of society for profit. While Signe is experiencing an unlimited hunger for attention, this discovery comes to her as a remedy, and she progresses towards becoming a model. Even being on magazine and book covers does not satisfy her.

The character in the movie is the type that can be encountered in today’s world, but it is equally difficult to empathize with. In fact, it is inevitable for the viewer to feel ashamed on Signe’s behalf at times. Despite all the darkness and disturbing aspects of the character, it can be said that black humor works throughout the movie.

As a result of the events that occur, Signe has in a way turned her own life and the lives of those around her into a hell. Sick of Myself, in addition to being one of the notable films of 2022, can also be described as a movie that holds up a social mirror to today’s people living with self-concerns and existential pains in the metropolis.
